"Beyond the Call"

How do we do beyond the call?
the accidents, and strokes and all,
Beyond the blood, the wounds, the breaks,
The heart attacks and lives at stake.

Beyond the thoughts of suicide,
to see what really is inside,
To lend some hope to the inner man,
To help a child to understand.

How do we go beyond the call?
What really matters most of all?
To touch a life; within, without,
That is what it's all about.

Kneel by the teenager deep in despair,
Believing that no one will ever care,
Offer them hope and a place to go,
A touch of compassion is ours to show.

Hold a crushed and lifeless child,
Before the paperwork is filed,
Gently wash and wrap the miss,
Expose a hand for mom to kiss.

How do we go beyond the call?
What really matters most of all?
To touch a life; within, without,
That is what it's all about.

We slow our steps to an aged one's gait,
Decipher what they articulate,
Explain each step to a trembling mate,
Going beyond to communicate.

We give to the others on our team,
A deep respect and high esteem,
Commit to watch each other's back,
And share opinions with great tact.

How do we go beyond the call?
What really matters most of all?
To touch a life; within, without,
That is what it's all about.
