Tonight at the monthly Columbia Borough Public Safety Meeting, Unit Member - Paramedic Colin Shaw was recognized by Susquehanna Valley EMS for his role in the life saving efforts of Mr. Barry Deets. Mr. Deets is the Father of former Unit Member Andrew Deets, who served the Department for over 5 years.

On 07/22/17 @ 14:14 hours, Squad 8-1 (Paramedic Shaw) along with Medic 77-3 (SVEMS-Mount Joy) were dispatched to Mr. Deets residence for Chest Pains Class 1. Squad 8-1 arrived on the scene within 2 ½ minutes from the time of dispatch. Mr. Deets was found in his living room complaining of severe chest pains, so bad, that he stated it hurt to breathe. Paramedic Shaw in normal fashion began assessing vital signs, gathering history and administered Aspirin as we do for most chest pain patients. Shortly thereafter Medic 77-3 arrived on the scene. While in the process of extricating Mr. Deets to the Ambulance, he went into Cardiac Arrest (not awake/not breathing/no pulse).

Now joined by Paramedic's Jerry Cortes, Joel Martin, EMT Matt Applegarth & David Eberly from Medic's 77-3/77-7, crews immediately loaded Mr. Deets into the Ambulance and began life saving efforts which included CPR, breathing, medications and defibrillating Mr. Deets heart . After about 5 minutes and defibrillation, Mr. Deets heart began beating on its own. He sat up on the litter, obviously confused and out of it for the current situation in which just took place. Paramedic Shaw then assisted during transport to a local hospital.

Mr. Deets was discharged from the hospital several days later with no deficits and is home doing extremely well! Mr. Deets was able to join us this evening to assist with delivering the “Clinical Life Save” awards. We wish him a continued healthy success and thank him for his kind words! Congratulations and job well done to Colin, Jerry, Joel, David & Matt!
